Ah l’Autriche! Son petit Mozart, ses cimes enneigés, son Red Bull et son heavy métal! Parmi ces poncifs on ne s’attend effectivement pas à trouver un groupe qui marche sur les plates-bandes d’Enforcer, Stallion, Ambush et Skull Fist. Attention groupe prometteur!

1- D’où vous est venue l’idée du nom du groupe, l’avez-vous réfléchit ou est-ce sorti comme cela?

Fabio : Bonjour KAOSGUARDS, merci pour l’interview. C’est notre première interview pour un magazine français, donc c’est plutôt cool pour nous. Nous sommes LIQUID STEEL, un groupe de Heavy Metal traditionnel de l’ouest de l’Autriche et nous sommes actifs depuis 2009. Le nom vient de notre ancien batteur, qui l’a suggéré et nous avons écrit la chanson « Liquid Steel » par la suite. La chanson est évidemment un hommage à l’un de mes films préférés – « Terminator » ou la machine LIQUID STEEL si vous voulez.

2- Pourquoi vouliez-vous jouer ce genre de musique?

Fabio : Nous l’aimons tous. Aussi simple que cela. Nous sommes fiers d’êtrer un groupe de Heavy Metal traditionnel parce que nous voulons porter le flambeau. Tous nos groupes préférés datent des années 80, il est donc logique que nous fassions ce que nous faisons. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de groupes qui jouent ce genre là d’où nous venons de toute façon. Les groupes sont un peu plus extrêmes ici, mais cela n’a pas d’importance. Nous nous soutenons tous et allons voir d’autres groupes jouer en live.

3- Vous connaissiez-vous avant la formation du groupe?

Fabio : Je connaissais Julle et Ferdl avant et je savais que Martin pouvait jouer de la batterie. Notre bassiste Monte, nous a rejoint par la suite. Julle jouait dans un groupe local appelé Tone et Ferdl et moi jouions ensemble dans un groupe de reprises.

4- Chaque groupe préféré des membres du groupe?

Fabio : Je ne peux pas parler pour tous les autres membres mais évidemment Iron Maiden, Judas Priest et Metallica sont nos parrains. Il y a une tonne de nouveaux groupes que nous aimons tous aussi. Enforcer, Stallion, Ambush et bien sûr Skull Fist ne sont que quelques-uns d’entre eux.

5- Qui ou qu’est-ce qui t’inspire pour écrire des chansons?

Fabio : C’est très différent à chaque fois que vous écrivez une chanson. Pour moi en tant que parolier, cela peut être une ligne que je rattrape quelque part, comme « Kingdom of Silence » qui fait référence à un mouvement artistique en Syrie où artistes et intellectuels ont libéré une créativité artistique remarquable comme forme de protestation non-violente contre leur gouvernement. Que leurs voix soient entendues dans le monde entier. Sur cet album, je suis particulièrement fier de la chanson titre « Mountains of Madness » qui est inspirée du livre du même nom de H.P. Lovecraft. « Victim of the Night » est inspiré d’une citation que j’ai lue quelque part : « Toute croissance est un saut dans le noir, un acte spontané non prémédité sans le bénéfice de l’expérience. » (Henry Miller) Cela signifie que vous ne pouvez évoluer en tant que personne que lorsque vous essayez de nouvelles choses. De temps en temps, vous devriez sauter dans l’inconnu pour voir où vous allez atterrir.

6- Où était votre dernier concert?
Fabio : Nous avons joué au merveilleux « Hard & Heavy » dans l’ouest de l’Autriche et nous nous sommes vraiment éclatés.

7- Où aimeriez-vous jouer?

Fabio : Personnellement, j’adorerais jouer au Japon ou en Amérique du Sud, juste parce que c’est « exotique » pour nous. Mais pour être tout à fait honnête, nous adorons jouer. Où que ce soit. Jouer dans un pays étranger est évidemment très spécial à chaque fois et nous avons eu de la chance à cet égard.

8- L’un d’entre vous a-t-il déjà souffert du trac ? Une astuce pour les débutants sur la façon de d’éviter cela?

Fabio : C’est une bonne question. Cela peut parfois devenir un peu angoissant, vous savez. Je ne peux pas parler pour les autres gars, mais généralement, vous jouer et faites ce que vous avez à faire. Pour moi, la nervosité disparaît généralement dès la première chanson. Lorsque l’adrénaline commence à monter et que les gens réagissent, c’est la meilleure sensation possible. Ce que vous devez garder à l’esprit, c’est que les gens veulent vraiment que vous soyez bon. Ils veulent que vous passiez un bon moment sur scène, afin qu’ils puissent profiter du spectacle. Personne ne veut vous voir échouer. Donc, le mieux est probablement d’être vous-même, de ne pas prétendre être quelqu’un que vous n’êtes pas et de toujours y akker à fond.

9- Quels groupes vous ont le plus inspiré?

Fabio : Trop pour les mentionner à de nombreux niveaux différents. Je vais essayer d’en choisir quelques-uns. Iron Maiden – de toutes les manières possibles. Musicalement, lyriquement et personnellement, ils sont toujours les meilleurs dans ce qu’ils font. Les Ramones – pour leur arrogance, la simplicité et la saleté. Phil Lynott en tant que parolier. C’était un poète et l’un des gars les plus cool du Rock n’Roll. Je pourrais dire la même chose à propos de Lemmy aussi… Ronnie James Dio en tant que chanteur, auteur-compositeur et interprète. J’ai la chance d’avoir pu le voir.

10- Quelle est la chose la plus étrange qu’un fan vous ait jamais demandé ?

Fabio : C’est amusant que tu en parles. Il ne se passe pas beaucoup de choses étranges, car nous sommes encore une formation « underground ». Ce qui nous paraissait vraiment bizarre à l’époque ; nous étions en visiteurs pour un petit festival underground en Allemagne et il y avait un gars qui nous a reconnu et a demandé un autographe. Il nous a emmenés dans sa voiture et a sorti ces gigantesques affiches grandeur nature de chaque membre du groupe pour les faire signer. Nous étions un peu perplexes pour être honnêtes parce que nous n’avons pas joué ce jour-là et il y avait ce méga fan qui voulait que ces affiches soient signées. Une expérience vraiment étrange!

11- Que pensez-vous de vos fans ?

Fabio : Eh bien, qu’est-ce que je peux dire. Nous les aimons. C’est notre troisième album et les gens nous soutiennent. Si personne n’avait acheté notre album, je ne suis pas sûr que nous en aurions fait un autre. Nous sommes donc très heureux de recevoir ce soutien du monde entier. Les gens nous écrivent des Philippines et de tous ces endroits incroyables et nous disent à quel point ils aiment notre disque. Incroyable vraiment!

12- LIQUID STEEL « live » en France, c’est possible?

Fabio : Je vais citer Wayne’s World ici : « Si vous les booker, ils viendront ». Évidemment, nous adorerions jouer en France. Espérons que cela arrivera un jour. Croisons les doigts.

1- Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Fabio: Hello Kaosguards- thank you for the interview. This is our first time interview for a French magazine- so, that’s pretty cool for us. We are Liquid Steel a traditional Heavy Metal band from western Austria and we’ve been active since 2009. The name came from our former drummer, who suggested it and we wrote the song Liquid Steel afterwards. The song is obviously a tribute to one of my favourite movies- “Terminator” or the machine Liquid Steel if you like.

2- Why did you want to play this genre?

Fabio: We all love it. Simple as that. We take pride in calling us a traditional Heavy Metal band because we want to carry the torch. All our favourite bands are from the 80s, so it kind of makes sense that we do what we do. There are not many bands who play this genre where we come from anyway. Bands are kind of more extreme down here but it doesn’t matter. We all support each other and go to see other bands play live.

3- Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Fabio: I did know Julle and Ferdl before and I knew that Martin could play the drums. Our bassist Monte, joined afterwards. Julle used to play in a local band called “Tone” and Ferdl and I used to play in a covers band together.

4- Each band member favourite band?

Fabio: I can’t speak for all the other members but obviously Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica are the godfathers for us. There’s a ton of new bands we all love too. Enforcer, Stallion, Ambush and of course Skull Fist just being a few of them.

5- Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Fabio: That’s very different every time you write a song. For me as a lyricist, that can be a line that I catch up somewhere, like “Kingdom of Silence” which refers to an artistic movement in Syria where artists and intellectuals have released remarkable artistic creativity as a form of nonviolent protest against their government. Let their voices be heard all over the world. On this album I am particularly proud of the title track “Mountains of Madness” which is inspired by the book of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft. “Victim of the Night” is inspired by a quote I read somewhere: “All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without the benefit of experience.” (Henry Miller) Meaning that you can only evolve as a person when you try out new things. Every now and then you should jump into the unknown to see where you’re gonna land.

6- Where was your last gig?

Fabio: We played at the wonderful “Hard & Heavy” in western Austria last weekend and we had an absolute blast.

7- Where would you like to act?

Fabio: Personally, I would love to play Japan or South America, just because it’s so exotic to us. But to be quite honest, we just love playing. Wherever it is. Playing a foreign country obviously is very special each time and we’ve been fortunate in that regard.

8- Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Fabio: That’s a good question. It can get a bit nerve wrecking at times, you know. I can’t speak for the other guys, but usually you just go out and do whatever you have to do. For me, the nervousness usually disappears within the first song or so. When the adrenaline starts to flow and people react that’s the best possible feeling ever. What you have to keep in mind is that people actually want you to be good. They want you to have a good time on stage, so that they can enjoy the show. Nobody wants to see you fail. So, the best is probably, be yourself, don’t pretend to be somebody you’re not and always practise enough.

9- What bands have inspired you the most?

Fabio: Too many to mention on many different levels. I’ll try and pick out a few. Iron Maiden- in every possible way. Musically, lyrically and personally they are still the best at what they do. The Ramones- for their snottiness, the simplicity and the dirt. Phil Lynott as a lyricist. He was a poet and one of the coolest guys in Rock n’Roll. I could say the same thing about Lemmy too… Ronnie James Dio as a singer, songwriter and performer. I am fortunate to have been able to see him.

10- What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Fabio: It’s fun that you mention it. Not a lot of weird things happen, because we’re still pretty much underground. What really seemed weird at the time to us; we were visitors for a small underground festival in Germany and there was one guy who recognized us and asked for an autograph. He took us to his car and pulled out those gigantic life-sized posters of each band member to get them signed. We were a bit puzzled to be honest because we didn’t perform that day and there was this mega fan who wanted those self-made posters signed. An humbling experience.

11- What do you think of your fans?

Fabio: Well, what can I say. We love ‘em. This is our third full-length album and people support us. If nobody had bought our album I’m not sure we would’ve done another one. So, we’re really glad we get this support from all around the world. People write us from the Philippines and all these amazing places and tell us how much they love our record. Amazing really.

12- LIQUID STEEL « live » in France, it’s possible? 

Fabio: I’m gonna quote Wayne’s World here: “If you book them, they will come”. Obviously, we would love to play France. Hopefully it will happen one day. Let’s keep fingers crossed.
